WP:FFD

Files for discussion (FfD) is for listing images and other media files which are unneeded or have either free content or non-free content usage concerns. Files that have been listed here for more than 7 days are eligible for either deletion or removal from pages if either a consensus to do so has been reached or no objections to deletion or removal have been raised. To quote the non-free content criteria, "it is the duty of users seeking to include or retain content to provide a valid rationale; those seeking to remove or delete it are not required to show that one cannot be created." For undeletion requests, first contact the administrator who deleted the file. If you are unable to resolve the issue with that administrator, the matter should be brought to deletion review.

Examples of what files you may request for deletion or change here:

Obsolete – The file has been replaced by a better version.
Orphan – The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia.
Unencyclopedic – The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in any Wikimedia project.
Low quality – The file is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns.
Copyright violation – The file might be used in violation of copyright.
Possibly unfree – The file is tagged with a freeness claim, but may actually be eligible for copyright in the United States.
NFCC violation – The file is used under a claim of fair use but does not meet the requirements.
NFCC applied to free image – The file is used under a claim of fair use, but the file is either too simple, or is an image which has been wrongly labeled given evidence presented on the file description page.

What not to list here[edit]

For speedy deletion candidates, do not use this page; instead use one of the speedy deletion templates. See the criteria for speedy deletion. These are: duplicates (where both files are on Wikipedia), thumbnails, broken files, non-existent files, non-commercial, "by permission" files and files which are not an image, sound file or video clip and have no encyclopedic use.
Files that have no source, have an unknown copyright, are unused or replaceable non-free, or are non-free without rationale can be marked so that they will be deleted after a week, and should not be listed on this page. Add one of the following to the file page:
1. {{subst:nsd}} if a file has no source indicated
2. {{subst:nld}} if a file has a source but no licensing information
3. {{subst:orfud}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but isn't used in any articles
4. {{subst:rfu}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but could be replaced by a free file
5. {{subst:dfu|reason}} if a file has a non-free copyright tag but the rationale isn't sufficient or is disputed
6. {{subst:frn}} if a file has no non-free use rationale
Redundant or duplicate files do not have to be listed here. Please use
1. {{isd|Full name of file excluding the "File:" prefix}} for speedy deletion if the other file is on Wikipedia, not on Commons
2. {{now commons|File:NEW FILENAME}} if the file now exists on Commons, or {{now commons}} for files with the same name on Commons. (Don't nominate protected images, they are usually locally uploaded and protected since they are used in an interface message or in a highly used template, thus they are high-risk.)
For blatant copyright infringements, use speedy deletion by tagging the file {{db-f9}}
If a file is listed as public domain or under a free license, but lacks verification of this (either by an OTRS ticket number or a notice on the source website), tag it as {{subst:npd}}.
Files that are hosted on Wikimedia Commons cannot be deleted via this process. Please use the Commons deletion page instead.
Description pages with no local file, even though they are in the file namespace, should not be listed here.
1. Redirects should be treated as in any other namespace: if no speedy deletion criteria apply, they should be listed at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion.
2. Local description pages for files hosted on Commons are usually speedy-deletable under criterion F2; use {{db-nofile}}.
3. Local description pages with no associated file are speedy-deletable under criterion G8; use {{db-imagepage}}.
4. Any other deletion of a description page with no local file should be listed at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion.
If a file is appropriately licensed and could be usable elsewhere, consider copying it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of listing it for deletion. Once copied to the Commons, it is eligible for speedy deletion per criterion 8 for files.
If you are the uploader of the image, tag it with {{db-author}}.

Instructions for listing files for discussion

To list a file:

1	Edit the file page. Add `{{ffd\|log=2016 December 17}}` to the file page.
2	Create its FfD subsection. Follow this edit link and list the file using `{{subst:ffd2\|File_name.ext\|Uploader= \|Reason= }} ~~~~` Leave the subject heading blank. If the file has been replaced by another file, name the file that replaced it in your reason for deletion. Refer below for a list of other common reasons. For listing additional files with the same reason, edit the first file section and use `{{subst:ffd2a\|File_name.ext \|Uploader= }}` for each additional file. Also, add `{{ffd\|log=2016 December 17}}` to the top of the file page of each file other than the first one nominated.
3	Give due notice. Inform the uploader by adding a message to their talk page using `{{subst:fdw\|File_name.ext}}` Remember to replace "File_name.ext" with the name of the image or media For multiple images by the same user, use `{{subst:fdw-multi\|First_file.ext \|Second_file.ext \|Third_file.ext}} ~~~~` (can handle up to 26) If the image is in use, also consider adding `{{ffdc\|File_name.ext\|log=2016 December 17}}` to the caption(s), or adding a notice to the article talk pages. Consider also notifying relevant WikiProjects of the discussion.

State the reasons why the file should be deleted, removed, or altered. Also, state what specific action should be taken, preferably in bold text; this allows discussion participants and closers to better understand the purpose of the nomination. Some examples of nomination statements include:

Delete. Orphaned with no foreseeable encyclopedic usage.
Delete. Replaced by File:FILE2.
Free (public domain) file may actually be eligible for copyright in the United States. This photograph was actually first published in 1920, not 1926.
Remove from ARTICLE1 and ARTICLE2. The file only meets WP:NFCC#8 with its use in ARTICLE3.
Non-free file may actually be free. This logo does not seem to meet the threshold of originality to be eligible for copyright in the United States and should actually be tagged free using {{PD-logo}}.

Some common reasons for deletion or removal from pages are:

Obsolete - The file has been replaced by a better version. Indicate the new file name (often abbreviated OB)
Orphan - The file is not used on any pages in Wikipedia. (If the file is only available under "fair use", please use {{subst:orfud}} instead). Please consider moving "good" free licensed files to Commons rather than outright deleting them, other projects may find a use for them even if we have none; you can also apply {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} . (often abbreviated OR, not to be confused with original research which generally doesn't apply to images)
Unencyclopedic - The file doesn't seem likely to be useful in this encyclopedia (or for any Wikimedia project). Images used on userpages should generally not be nominated on this basis alone unless the user is violating the Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not policy by using Wikipedia to host excessive amounts unencyclopedic material (most commonly private photos). (often abbreviated UE)
Low quality - The image is of an extremely low resolution, distorted, or has other physical image quality concerns. (often abbreviated LQ)
Copyright violation - The file might be used in violation of copyright. (often abbreviated CV)
Possibly unfree file - The file marked as free may actually be non-free. If the file is determined to be non-free, then it will be subject to the non-free content criteria in order to remain on Wikipedia.
Non-free file issues - The non-free file may not meet all requirements outlined in the non-free file use policy, or may not be necessary to retain on Wikipedia or specific articles due to either free alternatives or better non-free alternative(s) existing.
File marked as non-free may actually be free - The file is marked non-free, but may actually be free content. (Example: A logo may not eligible for copyright alone because it is not original enough, and thus the logo is considered to be in the public domain.)

These are not the only "valid" reasons to discuss a file. Any properly explained reason can be used. The above list comprises the most common and uncontroversial ones.

Since abbreviated deletion reasons will not be familiar to most Wikipedians, especially newbies, please consider using full words. A few extra keystrokes now can save paragraphs of explanation to a panicked uploader wondering what's wrong with their image.

If you remove a file from an article, list the article from which you removed it so there can be community review of whether the file should be deleted. This is necessary because file pages do not remember the articles on which the file were previously used.

In responding to the deletion nomination, consider adding your post in the format

where "Delete", "Keep", "Comment", or something else may replace "View". In posting their reasoning, many editors use abbreviations and cite to the following:

Wikipedia:NFCC#1 – Free equivalent is/is not available
Wikipedia:NFCC#8 – Significance
Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images 2 – Unacceptable image use

Remember that polling is not a substitute for discussion. Wikipedia's primary method of determining consensus is through editing and discussion, not voting. Although editors occasionally use straw polls in an attempt to test for consensus, polls or surveys sometimes impede rather than assist discussion. They should be used with caution, and are no more binding than any other consensus decision.

Also remember that if you believe that an image is potentially useful for other projects and should be moved to Wikimedia Commons, in lieu of responding '''Move to Commons''', you can move it there yourself. See Wikipedia:Moving files to the Commons for instructions.

Fails NFCC #8 in every way imaginable, at least the way it's presently used. The Death of Eric Garner article already states multiple times that Garner is African-American; no picture is necessary to enhance the reader's understanding of that fact unless we presume the vast majority of readers have never seen any dark-skinned person, which I highly doubt is the case. He is deceased so the image is no longer needed to identify him as nobody is going to run into him when they're going to get cigarettes. There is no commentary on that image, sourced or even unsourced, in the accompanying "background" section, a serious violation of the non-free content policy. It may just be a Facebook profile photo, but U.S. copyright law does not discriminate and copyright attaches to it automatically, copyright we cannot disregard The article is not a biography of Garner, which might justify an image of him; instead is about his death. If an unfree image is deemed necessary to illustrate the article, I suggest instead that we get a still from the cell-phone video of the cops killing him, which would be relevant as it would be a picture of the event that is the subject of the article, or even a portion of that video itself, which could be obtained and converted to our formats Daniel Case (talk) 23:45, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Though I uploaded ~~File:Eric Garner police confrontation screenshot.jpg~~ in response to the nomination, I previewed the article (portion of it actually) without the image in the Background section. If "Eric Garner" is not the topic of the article, how else would a reader recognize him? By finding the image somewhere? Also, how else would a reader understand the importance and impact of the incident? By reading the whole thing? Is a 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) tall, 350-pound (160 kg), 43-year-old African American man adequate enough without the non-free pre-death image of him? Well, the lead image and the pre-death image don't have the same purpose. "Contextual significance" would mean circumstantial or factorial significance of Garner's death. Before I vote, I am conflicted about whether readers are trusted to understand Garner's death without the image of him before his death. Statistics say that the article has huge audience. Without the pre-death image of Garner, readers would see the death as too sensational to be in Wikipedia but also to be deleted. It's not Wikipedia's place or stated role to lead readers to that conclusion, or any conclusion: the facts of Garner's death, as reported by the many sources cited, speak for themselves enough for readers to make up their own conclusions.

If we included a fair-use picture of Officer Pantaleo, would you defend it on the grounds that it would help readers see he was a human being who had to make a difficult decision? That's essentially the same thing.

The death itself was the subject of considerable news coverage at the time that was enough to establish its notability without having to have a picture of the deceased. How is Pantaleo compared to Garner? Also, the title still has the victim's name, even with "Death of". I know Garner is not the main subject of the article; he can be the subtopic of the article. The article discusses death, investigation, trial, and settlement. Nevertheless, it also describes brief background of the victim in one section. I am reading WP:NFC#Meeting the contextual significance criterion, which is also vague about handling cases about deaths of individuals and the individuals themselves. However, persons would see the bio image as insignificant just because the article is about the "Death of". The interpretations of NFCC varies. One would say that the image meets all criteria; you said that the image is insignificant to Garner's death. Though pre-death images are used as commemorations, Wikipedia ≠ memorial. Nevertheless, the pre-death image of Garner is as encyclopedic as the current lead image of Garner being arm-choked by the police. If you are discussing significance, if the victim's name is not part of the title, the bio image would not be significant. However, even with "Death of", there is also "Eric Garner". Statistics would say that the amount of readers typing or clicking just "Eric Garner" is very low. Go-Gos cover art[edit]

Non-free cover art being used in The Go-Go's#History. Each file has a non-free use rationale for the stand-alone article about the album/song and the band, but this type of non-free use in band articles is generally not allowed per WP:NFC#cite_note-2 because it tends to be decorative. Neither piece of cover art is the subject of any sourced discussion in the band's article so the context required by WP:NFCC#8. Moreover, each of the stand-alone articles for the album and song is wikilinked in the band's article, so the cover art may be seen there per number 6 of WP:NFC#UUI. Comment - It is not at all clear what the situation is, and probably would require a legal opinion o the interpretation of the license. On the face, of it, the license as supplied at their website is very specific that the images are under a CC-BY license which allows for commercial use, so these images have the appropriate license. The Foundation sent in an OTRS ticket explicitly stating that they do not wish to license their images to anyone except "the media", not including Wikipedia, under CC-BY. Wikipedia articles are not required to use only files which come form Commons, but files uploaded locally to Wikipedia still have to satisfy WP:COPY, which means images files have to be licensed to allow commercial use by anyone without restriction for them to be "freely licensed" even locally on Wikipedia. In some cases, copyrighted content can be uploaded locally as non-free content as long as its usage satisfies WP:NFCCP. The problem with doing that is that non-free images of living individuals are generally considered to fail WP:NFCC#1, so trying to use it that means it will almost surely be deleted as "replaceable fair use". Since Eisenman is still living, the only option might be to see if another freely licensed image of her exists, or just wait until someone creates another one. The concern raised was that it is a 'mark' (meaning a trademark) not that it is copyrighted. Trademarks that are not copyrighted can be uploaded to Commons, and this logo seems (IMO) to be well below the threshold of originality in the US. I suspect that the image was copied from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) web page [1]. If you click on "View actual size" you get an image size (1175×802) that matches the image size we have. If you click on the "website information" link you get here [2], where it says "All material on this site is subject to copyright." The MPS has claimed copyright, so we should delete the image.

It is possible that the uploader was the photographer, but image is of riot police, either at a public disturbance or in training, and the viewpoint suggests that it was almost certainly taken by a police-authorised photographer, probably one working for the Police.

Two of the other photos from the same uploader that I nominated (now deleted) were the same as these images on Flickr: [3], [4] They were uploaded there by Flickr user "Chris' 999 Pics". This could be the same person as our "Leobruce02", but there is nothing in the user names to suggest this. I have nominated this uploader's File:Essex Police Response Vehicle.jpg for discussion, but I haven't found this online. Two of this uploader's other images are police and fire service logos, with questionable claims for copyright ownership: File:Essex Police Logo.png and File:ECFRS logo.jpg. Non-free images of Gandhi[edit]

Non-free images of Ghandi being used in Ramgarh district#Indian National Congress 53rd Session. If these files really need to be treated as non-free images, then the way they are being used in the article does not satisfy WP:NFCC. The images themselves are not the subject of any sourced commentary within the relevant section, so the context required by WP:NFCC#8 is not clear at all. Moreover, if the purpose is to simply show Gandhi as is being claimed by their respective non-free use rationales, then there are a number of freely licensed/public domain images at c:Category:Mohandas K. Gandhi which could possibly be used to serve the same encyclopedic purpose per WP:NFCC#1. If that is the case, the image should be tagged as "{{PD-ineligible-USonly}}". However, the 3D "F" image looks original enough in the USA. Also, the image is the "work for hire," and Atlantic Records may claim copyright of the artwork due to copyright notice on the album. As I said on Commons, twice, typefaces do not have a copyright in the USA. The 3D "F" is only one letter, but nonetheless as one letter of a typeface, the letter itself cannot have a USA copyright. There is no copyright for arrangement of letters (typography) in the USA as there is in the UK. Although "I Want to Know What Love Is" is a full sentence and might have a copyright, song and book titles cannot be copyrighted. Therefore there is nothing on the album cover that can have a copyright. Whether or not there is a copyright, the work for hire issue is irrelevant. Chicago Slaughter files[edit]

Non-free files being used in the main infobox of Chicago Slaughter. Both have a non-free use rationale for the article, but both files are not really needed per WP:NFCC#3a. The helmet file and logo file basically show the same logo, so no new encyclopedic information is provided by showing them both. Not sure which one should go, but perhaps the helmet file is the one which should be kept since it is an article about an American football team.

It is highly questionable whether the file meets WP:NFCC#8 ~~even with its use in The Myth of the Eastern Front, let alone~~ on HIAG or Waffen-SS in popular culture. There is no reason I can see that its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, or that its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. There is no discussion of the book cover in the articles in question, and as it depicts a fairly nondescript soldier, it isn't clear what it conveys in any case. In addition to this, I am concerned that its use is a vehicle for promoting the book on WP, as the uploader uses the book extensively as a source on several articles. I note that the caption on the book article usage has been improved, and I therefore drop my suggestion of deletion from the book article. However, the usage on the HIAG article is extremely tenuous, as the man depicted isn't a Waffen-SS man, which is obvious from his insignia. Claiming that Waffen-SS units served in the Third Battle of Kharkov is completely irrelevant to the image. The same thing applies to the usage in the Waffen-SS in popular culture article. Keep for all (as file uploader). The image's use at HIAG was discussed during GAN, and that was one of the images that was retained on recommendation from Diannaa. When Waffen-SS in popular culture was spun off from HIAG, I included the image on the same rationale. You haven't addressed what relevance has the image has for the two articles on the Waffen-SS. It is clearly not an image of a Waffen-SS soldier. Your editing history shows you are obviously quite enamoured of Smelser and Davies, it has nothing to do with assuming good faith. Why not choose an image of an Avalon Hill wargame? I updated the captions to make them more relevant to the non-book articles. Re being "obviously quite enamoured of Smelser and Davies", I could equally point out to the nom's use of titles from J.J. Fedorowicz Publishing, which is critiqued in the book in question; see for example: Talk:Artur Phleps#Roland Kaltenegger and Otto Kumm. Does such use mean that the nom is "enarmoured" with Otto Kumm? That is a ridiculous assertion. I haven't created an article on Kumm like you have on Ronald Smelser, I haven't written an article on Kumm's book like you have on the one Smelser co-wrote, and I haven't used Kumm extensively on a significant number of articles like you have with Smelser and Davies. That was not an assertion, but a question, obviously asked tongue-in-cheek. My point is that language of communications with fellow editors matters, and the noms continued allegations of me promoting the book matter as well: "Your relationship to Smelser et al begs the question, given your promotion of them throughout WP" (Source: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/J.J. Fedorowicz Publishing). I suggest that the nom also examines my "relationship" with other historians, such as David T. Zabecki, Christian Hartmann, Jonathan House, etc, since these are the article that I created. Am I enarmoured with these authors too? Introspective[edit]

The rainbow color bars of Introspective may not be original enough for copyright in the US. However, having the bar banner saying "Introspective/Pet Shop Boys" (in CAPS actually) would make the cover itself potentially copyrightable. Similar to this, the Car Credit City logo may not be copyrightable, but its derivative logo is by containing the banner of the company's name. When I asked one of admins how original a logo must be for copyright, an admin said that having the name inside an eighth-note logo is original enough.
